Astonishingly enough, I managed to procrastinate my first yoga class for an entire year and never actually got around to checking it off my list of 27 by 27. Cara gave me the nudge that I needed to step out of my comfort zone and just two short days after committing to try again (on my newest list) I finally did it!
Onelife Fitness held a free yoga class on the rooftop of a downtown Kansas City building at sunset. Needless to say, I was spoiled for my first go around. My biggest fear going into it was the fact that I knew next to nothing about yoga poses. And if I’m being honest, I still don’t know much. The Bar Method classes I’ve been taking have familiarized me with poses like downward dog and child’s pose, but those are fairly manageable.
After sneaking a few quick peaks at my neighbors, I picked up on things pretty fast. The energy was amazing and being in the fresh air felt so freeing. I’m looking forward to taking another yoga again and learning more, but until then, I’ll be reading up on Balance in the Burbs.
p/s Cara brought along two friends from work and it just so happened that one of them was my best friend in grade school. Seeing her brought back a rush of memories and we joked about things coming full circle. One minute we were dancing in the 4th grade talent show to Crystal Waters’ “100% Pure Love” and the next thing we know, we’re standing on a rooftop reminiscing 18 years later. Life is cool like that.
Have you ever taken a yoga class before? Any tips for beginners like me?
I really enjoy yoga but haven’t made much time for it lately. Maya Yoga has a $5 community class on Sundays. It’s an intro to Ashtanga which is a set series so you do the same poses in the same order. It sort of cuts down on the confusion and allows you to master poses. You should check it out!
This looks amazing! I took a yoga class in the Wynwood district of Miami once – it was outdoors and surrounded by art during Art Basel. You should come visit me and take the class this year!
That is so cool that you reunited with an old friend! so crazy! Also yoga on a roof!? Okay I live in KC and need to know about this the next time it happens!

Proud of you for going out of your comfort zone! Also, it was great to finally meet you in person. If would love to yoga again! Or walk. Or coffee. Or wine. π P.S. Thanks for the shout out!
This looks so cool! I love the venue. I’ve tried yoga two times, and I am terrible at it. I am so inflexible. And then you ran into your friend from grade school? How random and awesome is that? It’s great to be able to reconnect with friends. Hope you’re having a great day!
I love events like this, but I’ve tried and tried doing yoga in a studio and I get sooooo bored! The runner in me just wants to constantly be moving, plus I’m not good at staying quiet for that long!
This looks like so much fun and the perfect way to test out yoga!
I’ve taken a few free yoga classes and it feels awesome! You should trie anti gravity yoga! I did it last year for my bday (I wrote a post, but I lost it, boo!) Inthink you’d like trying that π xo – Jessika http://www.jessclassy.com
Yoga is amazing, it just really takes a few classes to get used too… although its kinda pricey sometimes!
Eleventh & Sixteenth
Yay! I love practicing yoga. My body feels out of whack when I don’t practice regularly.

Oh my goodness – I LOVE yoga and I’m so sad I’ve been too busy to go these past few months. I’m so happy you enjoyed your practice! xx
I love the idea of this! I’m not much for yoga, but could totally be persuaded to take a class on a rooftop! π

I haven’t ever done yoga, but I’ve always wanted to! I really really should just bite the bullet and do it! This big class outside looks fun!
This looks amazing! I’m just a little jeaulous seriously on a rooftop that’s awesome! I need to get back into yoga so bad!
It was the best first experience I could have asked for!
That’s what I had to do! I’m really glad that I did it π
Wellll, I think that may have something to do with the fact that it was on my previous list and I didn’t do it, oops! It was so much fun π
I would like to know what you do for a workout, because you look amazing! We shall discuss over high cal margs and chips/dip soon π
I’m so happy that I finally did it. Now I just need to work on my moves (and learn all of their names) haha.
Mine feels that way if I don’t do any sort of physical activity. It’s nice to find new things I enjoy so I can switch them up!
It seems like all workout/fitness classes are on the pricier side, but I think they are worth it!
I wonder if they have something like that around KC? I’ll have to do a little searching! π
It was the best experience I could have asked for! Hopefully moving yoga indoors is just as rewarding π
Haha I hear ya. I’m supposed to be training right now, but this heat is killing me, literally. Even 5:45am runs are hot (to me)!
I’m flexible by any stretch of the imagination! The Bar Method classes I’ve been taking have helped tremendously though! It was so much fun seeing her, I couldn’t’ even believe it π
It was great meeting you as well! I’m so glad that I did it. I probably would have procrastinated it for another year if it weren’t for you. Yes to all of these things!
I couldn’t believe that it happened! Too fun π I’ll be sure to tweet/fb/insta if it does, because you aren’t the only one who said this!
I would love to do that π Miami is always calling my name!
Ooo, $5 – I can handle that! We should give it a go sometime.
I’m not really a type of person who likes to exercise so I couldn’t give an advice though I’ve been wanting to try anti-gravity yoga.

Someone else mentioned that to me recently. I need to find out if we have one of those around KC! Thanks so much for following along Alyssa.
That sounds like such a cool afternoon! I actually just purchased my first mat and am looking forward to some practice at home before I head to a class!

Sparkles and Shoes
That’s exciting Kelly! I practiced a few positions here and there at home, but being with a big group was quite the experience π Good luck!
Outdoor yoga is the coolest! Glad you enjoyed your first class – I always feel SO much better when I do yoga regularly
It set quite the precedent!
